The IRIS 4D/300 Series

IRIS 4D/300

S P E C I F I C A T I O N S H E E T

The 4D/300 Series of systems from Silicon Graphics offers the highest CPU, disk, and I/O performance of all SGI systems. Available in Server, GTX or VGX configurations, 4D/300 Series systems are ideal for a variety technical computing applications including Molecular Design, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Rendering, Simulation and Geophysics.

Features:

33 MHZ RISC Processors

The heart of the 4D/300 Series is the IP7-33 processor board. Each processor board contains two 33 MHz R3000/R3010 CPU/FPUs. Up to four IP7-33s can be configured in POWER Center 4D/300 Series systems for a total of 8 CPUs. Up to two IP7-33s can be configured in a twin tower 4D/300 Series for a total of 4 CPUs. Each CPU delivers over 29 VAX Dhrystone MIPS and 4.9 DP 100x100 Linpack MFLOPS.

Member of POWER Series Family

4D/300 systems are members of the highly successful POWER Series family from Silicon Graphics. POWER Series systems combine our state-of-the-art parallel architecture, called POWERpath, and our industry-leading Symmetric Multiprocessing UNIX, called IRIX, to provide the industry's leading parallel RISC systems. All POWER Series systems are binary compatible with one another as well as with the rest of Silicon Graphics products.

High Performance IP12 Disk Subsystem

Silicon Graphics IP12X disk subsystem includes the highest performance IP12 disks available. These 6 MB/sec drives are coupled with a state-of-the-art controller and a carefully tuned device driver. SGI uses a unique algorithm that, based on patterns of recent disk activity, dynamically optimizes allocation of the controller's 1MB data cache. The 4D/300 Series supports up to thirty-two 1.1GB drives, and drives can be striped to further increase the data transfer rate. With an MTBF of 100,000 hours, these drives will provide years of reliable service.

POWER Channel I/O Processor

The POWER Channel option provides the 4D/300 Series with dual, synchronous SCSI bus interfaces, a 32 MB/sec VME bus interface, and a block-mode DMA Ethernet controller. Using the POWER Channel, POWER Center systems can be configured with over 7 GB of low-cost SCSI disk storage. Multiple SCSI drives can be striped to deliver a sustainable file transfer rate of over 2.75 MB/sec. The Ethernet controller on the POWER Channel can transfer blocks of data directly to or from system memory, thereby eliminating the need for CPU intervention. The POWER Channel's VME bus can support four independent IP12 channels, with plenty of remaining bandwidth for additional Ethernet controllers, serial I/O controllers, and VME-based interfaces.

High Density Memory

All 4D/300 Series systems can be configured with up to 256 MB of ECC memory. Based on 4 Mbit DRAM, this memory is expandable in 32 MB increments.

Upgrades

The 4D/300 Series offers the ultimate in upgrade flexibility. Processors can be added in the field (up to the maximum of 8 CPUs) by simply plugging in processor boards. IRIX automatically adjusts to the number of processors, and no applications software changes are needed. A feature unique to Silicon Graphics is the ability to mix different speed processors in the same system. The 4D/300 Series' 33 MHz CPUs can be added to a 4D/200 Series multiprocessor without replacing that system's 25 MHz CPUs, and again with no software changes. Servers can be upgraded to include Silicon Graphics industry-leading graphics subsystems.

IRIX

IRIX is Silicon Graphics' symmetric multiprocessing implementation of the UNIX operating system. Based on AT&T System V.3, IRIX is SVID compliant. It includes numerous enhancements such as Silicon Graphics Extent File System and BSD 4.3 networking. With the introduction of the 4D/300 Series, IRIX offers the following additional features:
