The base board for the SGI320 was the 006 Rev A (designator silk-screened
into the plating on the back). All subsequent revisions used the same
base template.
Notes on Revisions:
- 006J - hacked U37
- 006K - hacked U37
- 007B - new IC at U37, no hack
- 117A - both hacked & un-hacked models. These appear to be either
hacked versions of new 006 boards that SGI had in stock or even returned
boards (of any revision) that were refurbished/re-tested. The 117A
sticky label appears to have been applied over a previous revision
number (in almost every case) after the board was hacked, repaired,
and/or re-certified (most were the 006 series, but there are some
007s too).
There are indications that some of the
early Cobalt chipsets (U29) were problematic and were therefore replaced
on some of the early 006 motherboards. These replacements were professionally
carried out and only under intensive microscopic examination could the
de/re-soldering be noticed.
It is believed that the 007 motherboards
had the newer version of the Cobalt chipset from the outset. This, and
the new VRM IC at U37 providing support for the Coppermine processors
might have been the reason for switching production from 006 to 007
motherboards.
