Ian's SGI Depot: FOR SALE! SGI Systems, Parts, Spares and Upgrades

Site Construction Policy

Last Change: 24/Aug/2006

Since the focus of my site is the provision of information, it is important to make it as easy as possible for visitors to obtain that information using whatever means of access they have available to them. As such, when it comes to web site construction, I'm a firm believer in simplicity of design (or, as my Uni HCI lecturer used to say, "No bells and whistles!").

Thus, you will find a minimum of inline images within my pages. Movie files are rare and used only when necessary. Background images are non-existent; I've made the default background colour white since that makes it easier to include inline home-made logos, etc.

All inline images are image size tagged, so you won't be waiting for ages before seeing the text.

I don't use CGI scripts, Java, forms or image maps; I may begin using image maps at some point, but never for main index pages. I have started using tables in places, though mainly just in the SGI Depot pages at the moment as it's an easy way of having something that works like an image map, but is easier to maintain and more portable across browsers.

My pages are designed for a display no smaller than XGA (1024x768), though sometimes a diagram image may require an SXGA (1280x1024) display to be fully visible (this is because diagrams in technical reports can sometimes contain complex detail, so my home-made versions of such diagrams end up larger than XGA in width). People with VGA or SVGA displays will see titles wrapping round, and logos may not be fully visible. Inline images, titles, etc. will look better with 24bit displays.

The above measures are designed to enable the maximum number of Internet users to access my site, eg. supporting Lynx browsers by using image size tags. There are more than 80 different web browsers used round the world to access the web, including many custom text-only browsers used by libraries, research bodies, etc. My site is designed to be as accessible as possible.

All image processing, artwork and logos done on an SGI Indy, Indigo2, O2 and Octane2 using:

If you really want to know how the main page logos were done, I'm willing to explain (email me). It's surprising what one can accomplish with as-supplied software and a few shareware/freeware packages.

Comments, suggestions, etc. are most welcome. Feel free to contact me.

Thanks for all your support!

Ian.
