Parts/Spares

Last Change: 20/Feb/2024, 0933hrs

I have a wide variety of parts and spares available for most systems. Note that IRIX CDs, keyboards, mice and monitor cables can be found in other sections as shown in the quick-links bar above.

The available categories for parts, spares and upgrades are as follows:

In all cases, please see the shipping costs page for details of postage charges to the UK, mainland Europe and beyond.

See the SCSI Items page for the complete list of available SCSI items, including disk drives, external drives/enclosures, CDROM/CDRW units, cables, adapters, terminators, etc.

Unless otherwise stated, all parts come with a 30 day warranty (hard disks are an exception - see the Disks Notes for details). If extended warranty cover is required, here is a costs table (the SCSI disks section has a separate table for hard drives):

      WARRANTY     |       <---------- Item Value (UKP) -------->
       TABLE | Under 100 | 100 to 249 | 250 to 499 | 500 to 1499 | 1500 to 2999 | 3000+
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Extend to 60 days | +30 | +60 | +90 | +120 | +240 | +360
Extend to 90 days | +60 | +90 | +150 | +240 | +480 | +720
Extend to 6 months | +90 | +150 | +270 | +450 | +900 | +1200
Extend to 1 year | +120 | +240 | +450 | +900 | +1500 | +1800

Any item shown in italics is not currently available, while any item shown in bold is something special or rare, eg. for disk drives it means the disk still has a valid end-user warranty. Lastly, some item names are links to pictures and/or more details about that item - I take pictures as and when I am able.

Hard Disk Drive Tables

I have a wide variety of disks available, in some cases a large number of a particular model (email for details of quantities). I now also have SAS drives for sale.

Original SGI-branded disks are listed in a separate table as they are priced differently. Likewise, 50pin disks are listed separately due to their higher value, though SGI-branded 50pin disks are listed in the SGI table.

See after the tables for detailed notes, warranty information, etc. In some cases a disk may show alternative pricing based on extra warranty cover, details of which will be shown in brackets. See the SCSI Items page for external storage units, JBOD RAID units, cables, terminators, etc.

To users of Indy/Indigo/Indigo2/ChallengeS systems: I recommend using an 80pin disk with a SCSI adapter - much cheaper, faster and more reliable than an old 50pin disk (the most common model I supply for this is a Seagate 36GB 15K, though if fitting two in an Indy it's best to include an extra cooling fan).

Lastly, please do contact me if you're looking for a disk that is not shown here - I have numerous disks which are not yet listed.

Please widen your browser window to view the table in full.

NOTES

Some drives still have valid manufacturer warranties; any such drive in the tables above will have the manufacturer name in bold type, and when I am able to find the time the model number will be a link to the warranty details for that drive, or a picture (or both); either way, feel free to email me for full details.

OEM drives do not have end-user warranties by definition, but I will cover any 15K rpm drive for 90 days, any 10K rpm drive for 60 days, any 7200rpm drive for 30 days, and any 5400rpm drive for 10 days, whatever the manufacturer's warranty may be. Extended warranty cover available on request as follows:

O2 can only use 1" 80pin SCA disks (though the external port can be used to connect to any type of drive), whereas Octane, Onyx2 and Origin can use both 1" and 1.6" SCAs.

IRIS Indigo and Indigo2 can use almost all types of drive, via a SCSI adapter for 68/80pin models, though I would recommend an 80pin SCA + adapter (the adapter for 68pin is more expensive, while 50pin disks of any reasonable capacity are also expensive). I have suitable 50/80pin adapters available on the SCSI page.

Indy normally uses 1" 50pin disks; 1.6" is possible, but prevents the use of the upper disk bay. 68pin and 80pin disks can be used with a suitable SCSI adapter, though an 80pin + adapter must utilise the low-profile direct 50/80 type adapter, otherwise again the upper bay will be impeded. The same limitations apply to ChallengeS.

For these SGIs which normally use 50pin disks, the compatibility exceptions are the early generations of U160 and U320 SCA drives, some of which do not support narrow or single-ended mode operation, though the equivalent 68pin model usually will. This is why, despite my using by default the Fujitsu MAS 36GB 15K SCA in O2 and Octane, in older systems like Indy or Indigo2 I instead use the Seagate ST336753LC 36GB 15K SCA, because the Fujitsu MAS does not support narrow/SE whereas the Seagate does (though the 68pin MAS will work ok if one uses the correct non-symmetrical 50/68pin adapter, but these adapters are harder to find).

Fuel normally uses 68pin disks, but can use an 80pin with an adapter. It is best to use a later drive which can properly exploit Fuel's faster U160 SCSI bus. O2/Octane/Onyx2/Origin may only have an UW bus (40MB/sec), but later models have better access times and make less noise, hence again why I use the Fujitsu MAS/MAX by default.

The addition of a PCI cage (or XTalk adapter) and a suitable SCSI card (eg. U2W or U160) will also allow Octane to properly exploit a modern fast drive, especially in RAID configurations (I get 175MB/sec off a simple dual-channel JBOD RAID on a QLA12160, though the same RAID runs much faster with a Fuel/Tezro since those systems have faster 66MHz PCI [Fuel] or 133MHz PCIX [Tezro]).

Tezro uses 80pin disks internally, but unlike Octane the sleds are designed only for 1" models. One can of course connect any type of drive externally. As with Fuel, it is worth having a fast drive since Tezro can properly exploit the extra speed.

Larger capacity drives are listed first. For drives of equal capacity, those with much higher sustained transfer rates may be valued higher, ie. drives that are better suited to faster SCSI buses or for use in RAID setups. Follow the 'specs' link for detailed information on any drive (if the link is defunct, copy the URL and find it on the Internet archive sites such as the Wayback machine). The table already shows average access time in milliseconds and typical maxium sustained transfer rates to aid comparisons. I also have my own benchmark results concerning sequential I/O and a custom access time test.

Lastly, note that original SGI-badged drives are more expensive than a non-SGI drive of the same capacity, or even the same model; but there is no need for hobbyists to use original SGI drives. This is why the SGI drives are in a separate table, they are of more interest to entities that may not be allowed to use 3rd-party models for various reasons, or of course to collectors.

Challenge/Onyx Parts/Spares

I have a variety of items suitable for Challenge/Onyx systems, and also for Challenge-S. Note that most parts for Challenge-S will be the same as for Indy, eg. memory, disks, disk sleds, CPUs, etc. Also see the SCSI items page for other relevant items such as external disk enclosures, CDROM units, etc.

Available unique items for Challenge-S systems are as follows (see the Indy section for PSUs, CPUs, RAM, disks, 10/100 option cards, Presenter cards, SCSI cards, etc.):

Available items for Challenge/Onyx systems are as follows (many other items coming soon! Ask me what you're looking for, I might have it but have not yet listed the item):

Note that for disks, I can supply any of the disks listed for Octane/Origin/etc. above, which will work just fine with a suitable SCSI adapter (simply configure the Onyx sled/bus to run in SE mode), or I do have a number of original HVD drives as detailed below and in the SCSI disks section above.
